How to Restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager (Windows 10/11)

Windows Explorer (also known as File Explorer) is a core Windows process responsible for the taskbar, desktop icons, Start Menu, and file management.
Sometimes, Windows Explorer may freeze, stop responding, or cause the taskbar to disappear. In these cases, restarting Explorer is the fastest way to fix the issue without restarting your computer.

Method 1: Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager (Recommended)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager

  2. Go to the Processes tab

  3. Find Windows Explorer

  4. Right-click on it and select Restart

Your screen may briefly flicker, and the taskbar and desktop will reload automatically.

Method 2: Start Explorer Manually (If It’s Missing)

If Windows Explorer does not appear in Task Manager:

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

  2. Click FileRun new task

  3. Type: explorer.exe

  4. Click OK or press Enter

This will launch Windows Explorer again.

Method 3: Restart Explorer Using Command Prompt

Use this method if Explorer is completely frozen:

  1. Open Task Manager

  2. Click FileRun new task

  3. Type cmd and check Create this task with administrative privileges

  4. Enter the following commands:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
explorer.exe
