How to change port remote desktop connection

You need to change the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) port from the default, which is 3389, to a non-standard one to improve security by making your system less vulnerable to automated attacks

Step 1: Change the port in the registry

  • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

  • Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp.

  • In the right-hand pane, double-click on PortNumber.

  • In the pop-up window, select the "Decimal" base.

  • Enter your new port number (e.g., 3390) and click "OK".

  • Close the Registry Edito

Step 2: Open the new port in the firewall

  • Open "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security".

  • Go to "Inbound Rules" and click "New Rule...".

  • Select "Port" and click "Next".

  • Choose "TCP" and enter your new port number in the "Specific local ports" field, then click "Next".

  • Select "Allow the connection" and click "Next".

  • Choose when the rule applies (Domain, Private, Public) and click "Next".

  • Give the rule a name (e.g., "RDP port 3390") and click "Finish".

Step 3: Restart and connect

  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

  • To connect, you will need to specify the new port. In the Remote Desktop Connection client, enter the IP address or computer name followed by a colon and the new port number (e.g., 192.168.1.100:3390)
